just celebrate

If you are celebrating, or you are celebrating with someone who is, Chanukah begins tonight! here are some things you can do:

  • learn about the holiday
  • get a Menorah and candles, look up the prayers if you don’t remember them and light the first candle tonight at sundown
  • play dreidel
  • give small gifts of chocolate or money (gelt) to children on each night of Hanukkah, give older children a $5 blank check each night to make out to the charity of their choice
  • eat foods cooked in oil
  • practice Tikun Olam (look it up!)

be grateful

Hello Mom- I was invited to spend Thanksgiving with a friend’s family because I can’t go home. It’s not a party so do I have to bring something?

YES, especially if you hope to get invited back, it’s also the right thing to do…bring anything- flowers, wine, cookies or a good book, just don’t show up empty handed…enjoy

just smile

Dear Mom- I am going to be surrounded by family during the holidays and some of my relatives are crazy. How do I deal with the crazies?

You can’t and don’t try…there is nothing that you can say or do that will make them less crazy, so try to find some entertainment value in it and be glad that you have a family. This too shall pass…

eat up

if there are not enough hours in the day to do everything that you need to do and you’re exhausted, these foods are supposed give you energy and keep you going longer…try them

  • whole grain crackers or wheat bran cereals
  • walnuts
  • dark chocolate
  • watermelon
  • pumpkin seeds
  • yogurt
  • tea
  • red bell pepper

If you haven’t noticed the holiday chaos will be spread out this year…plan accordingly

  • Chanukah begins at night on November 27 and ends December 5
  • Thanksgiving is November 28 and
  • Christmas is always December 25

here are a few ideas if you don’t want to shop for a month…

  • send a food or flowers of the month gift
  • make a donation to a charity or cause that you know your friend or relative has a connection to
  • get gift cards from stores, restaurants, spas, Amazon or almost anywhere
  • books are perfect gifts- cookbooks, how to books, fiction, non-fiction, books of photographs, books about animals, people and almost everything else
  • cook, can or bake something special
  • an invitation to dinner, lunch or brunch at your place or a restaurant
  • make something special and very personal, choose their favorite colors and designs to make: quilts and afghans, knit mittens, scarf and hat, an orchid in a special pot, paint a picture or find a special poster or photo, make a collage or add to their collection of whatever they collect!

what’s your number?

Dear Mom, Is it ok to ask someone that I met a party for a business card even though it was a social party and not a business thing?

Sure, and if someone gives you their business card when you ask that means he/she brought it so that someone would ask for it, and if they don’t have one you can offer yours or ask them to write their phone number on your card. Most people are flattered not annoyed when you ask for their card. Keep a few of yours with you al all times, you never know who you’re going to meet…and where

just ask

Mom, I’ll be going to holiday parties and I’m terrible at making small talk. How can I learn how to make small talk fast?

You don’t really have to learn how to make small talk, just walk up to a friendly looking person and ask him/her any question about  themself and you probably won’t need to say another word! everyone loves to talk about themselves…
