do something

Dear Ask Mom, I don’t want to go shopping and buy presents, but I know that friends will buy me something and I feel like I should give something back. What should I do?
Instead of giving them something, do something with your friends. Buy tickets to a concert, show or event, make reservations at a restaurant or take your friends to a food festival. Look up the special events happening in your area and you can all enjoy it together. Do something instead of buying something…

no more food

i can’t think about food, I can’t write about food and I can’t eat anymore food…sorry, you’re on your own today!

no sympathy

Dear Ask Mom, it has been a particularly rough year and I don’t think that I can celebrate the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. What should I do?
Since you are writing to me you must be doing better than many, many, many people. Go volunteer at a homeless shelter or battered woman’s shelter or go read stories to kids in a hospital. You’ll see in a minute how much you have to be thankful for. Hopefully it will change your attitude and maybe your life. If you wrote to me expecting sympathy, you made a big mistake.

Mom, every year at the last minute a couple of friends or acquaintances tell me that they have no where to go for Thanksgiving. Is this a hint to invite them? I don’t have a big place and a couple more people really makes a difference. What should I do?
I don’t think it matters how last minute the conversation is, you do what you would want someone to do to you. The food or amount of room you have or lack thereof is not the point…if you can help someone not be alone on Thanksgiving do it!

eat and go

If you are always eating on the run here’s an easy cook and eat on the run breakfast, lunch or dinner that’s very good- Spanish fried eggs

To make a Spanish fried egg: Heat about 1/4 inch of olive oil in a very small, heavy skillet. Heat over medium-high heat until very hot; it should just be beginning to smoke. Crack an egg into a cup or mug. When the oil is hot enough, carefully slip the egg into the oil and immediately turn the heat down to medium-low. Spoon the hot oil over the egg as it cooks. Cook for no more than a minute and a half then take the pan off the heat and remove the egg with a slotted spoon.

Sprinkle with sea salt and fresh pepper and enjoy immediately with a hunk of fresh bread-it will keep you running longer…

do the best you can…

Dear Ask mom, it seems like everyone is already in the ‘holiday spirit’ and I’m not. It’s actually making me feel worse. Help.
So many people have told me the same thing. It’s just a hard thing to admit because it feels like something must be wrong with you. There could be a lot of reasons why you feel the way you do.  Just because the calendar says it’s holiday time- be happy, doesn’t make it so. Try not to let other people’s expectations of how you should act be imposed on you. Do the best you can…

alone not lonely

Hi Mom, my friends think that you always have to be doing something and going out to have a good time. I don’t, but I can’t convince them and they think that I’m unhappy. I’m not. Is there some way to explain it to my friends?
It’s a hard thing for people who have to constantly be entertained and doing something in order to have fun to understand that you are happy being with yourself. I think that you’re the lucky one, but I don’t know if you can make your friends understand it. Don’t worry about what they think.

gotta have friends

Mom, If I owe a friend a favor I offer to help in return for asking for help. When a friend takes me up on it I’m sorry that I offered. What should I do?
Obviously, you need to stop offering when you don’t really mean it! Friendship is give and take- if you only want to take, you need to find a giver. But, that’s not really a friendship.
